Girls golf team wins State and other spring finals

Girls varsity golf team won their second consecutive state championship May 13 and Sophomore Jenny Morris won the individual title by shooting a four over par 76 at Stonebridge Golf Club. According Bill King, girls varsity coach, the future looks bright, “we are in good shape for the years to come.”
Boys varsity golf team finished third in state on May 13 at the Coosa Country Club. Freshman Patrick McShane finished second out of almost a hundred participants to lead the Tigers.
Girls varsity tennis team beat Model 5-0 in the first round of the region tournament on April 23 before losing to Cartersville 2-3. The team went 3-1 in region and won four of their last six making their overall record 5-8.
Boys varsity tennis team won the region tournament on April 25th and advanced to the quarterfinals of the state tournament. The team beat rival Lovett to break a six season losing streak on the way to a 12-5 record. Coach Carlos Ortega said simply: “Great Season!”
Girls varsity track team won fifth place in the state tournament May 4 after winning the region tournament two weeks earlier. “It was excellent with only two seniors on the team,” Ken Wempe, track and field head coach, said.
Boys varsity track team finished the season with a sixth place finish in the region tournament held at Chris Hunter Stadium on April 29 and 30. The Tigers earned fourth in the pole vault at the state tournament in Jefferson.
Girl’s varsity soccer team went 9-7-1 this season and finished second in region. They ended the season losing to number one seed Wesleyan in the opening round of the state tournament. Rachel Wiggins led Tiger scorers for the season with 31 goals and won the Most Valuable Female Soccer Player award for the Rome area.
Boy’s varsity soccer team won second place in region with a 3-1 record but found non-region competition more challenging and finished 4-10 overall.
Girl’s varsity lacrosse team created a winning season with a 7-5 record overall and a 6-2 region record. The team advanced to the quarterfinals in state before losing to Lovett, May 2.
Boy’s varsity lacrosse team advanced to the semi-finals of the state tournament before losing 11-12 to Westminster on May 4. The teams had an excellent season though, going 13-5 and 8-1 in region.
