Girls Basketball Highlighted by Mooney, Erwin, and Smith

The girls varsity basketball team, coached by Tommy Atha, finished the season with an 8 –12 record.
Leading the team scoring for the season was Beth Mooney with an average of 19.4 points per game. Freshman Meggie Beth Erwin was the second leading scorer, averaging 6.5 points per game. Clara Smith led the team with free throws, earning a 63.2 free throw percentage for the season.
“I have enjoyed coaching this group of girls as much as any that I have ever coached,” Atha said. “The team put forth a great effort regardless of whether we were winning or losing. They have a great attitude and a great work ethic, and it is girls like these that make coaching such a rewarding profession.”
In games since the last issue of Lakeside Lines:
In a 50-42 defeat at the hands of Gordon Lee, Friday, Jan. 21, Mooney earned 17 points and Kary Eaton 13.
The Calhoun game scheduled for Saturday, Jan 22, was postponed due to precarious winter weather.
The Tigers went up against Model, Tuesday, Jan. 25, and lost 64-39. At the time, the Blue Devils were ranked 14th in the state. Mooney and Erwin led the team scoring with 17 and 9 points, respectively.
The Lady Tigers achieved victory against Adairsville, Tuesday, Feb. 1. Mooney led the scoring with 26 points. During the game, Katie Pritchett and Clara Smith both made impressive 3-pointers.
The Trion game originally scheduled for Friday, Jan. 28, was postponed due to winter weather threats and was played Feb. 3. Although the first half of the game was very close, Trion pulled away in the second to conquer Darlington, 78-52. Mooney and Erwin led the scoring for Darlington, with 20 and 11 points, respectively.
Armuchee beat the Tigers, 70-56, Friday, Feb. 4. Mooney contributed 29 points to the game while Pritchett scored two 3-pointers.
Darlington lost to Calhoun, Saturday, Feb. 5, when Calhoun made an astonishing thirteen 3-pointers during the competition. Mooney scored a 22 points.
The Lady Tigers played their final competition this year at Shorter College during the sub-regional tournament, Tuesday, Feb. 8. The game, close until the very end, was decided in the final 90 seconds of the game when Armuchee defeated Darlington, 54-47.
