Get to Know: Frances Sanders

Frances Sanders has been on the custodial staff at Darlington for many years. Find out just how long she has been bringing smiles to students, faculty, staff, and parents and get to know something about Frances that just might surprise you.

 

How long have you worked at Darlington?

I’ve been on the custodial staff at Darlington for 30 years.

Where did you grow up?

Centre, Ala.

Tell us a little about your family...

I was raised on a farm in Alabama. My family picked cotton and had a huge vegetable garden. I remember my daddy plowing the field with a mule and for some reason I remember that my mother liked to braid the tails of the horses. I have one son, Toby Lashaun Leek.

Why did you choose Darlington?

My sister-in-law, Marie Williams, did housework for Mr. Moss. She helped me get a job here. I’ve worked all over campus, even the lower school when it was across town.

What music is playing in your car?

I love gospel music.

Who was your favorite teacher (and why)?

My cosmetology teacher, Mrs. Ardell, was my favorite teacher. She taught me a lot about life.

Washington, D.C.

If you could travel anywhere it would be?

Jerusalem

Beach or mountains?

I love the mountains.

The last book I read for fun was…

“The Joy Luck Club” by Amy Tan

 

My hobby is…

I used to love playing volleyball.

Dogs. I have two.

When I want to crush karaoke, my song is…

What I like most about Darlington is…

The students (especially the girls in Cooper House!) I love being around the students because I get to learn about their lives and their culture. I like to see and learn about the opportunities that they have now that haven’t always been available. My advice for all of the students at Darlington is to keep on dreaming.
