Gearing up for Centennial Alumni Weekend

Darlington School will host Centennial Alumni Weekend Friday through Sunday, Oct. 7 through 9. The weekend will celebrate the 100th birthday of Darlington, and will be a reunion for all alumni.
“Darlington only throws a party this big every 100 years, and you are invited,” said Lauren Ledbetter, alumni relations officer. “This is a celebration for everyone in Darlington’s extended family. Our goal is to have record alumni attendance. We want this to be the biggest party Darlington (and Rome) have ever seen.”
Friday’s activities will feature a Distinguished Alumnus Luncheon and Darlington Celebration honoring distinguished alumni George Griffin Sr. (’38) and Joyce Riddle Neely (’62T), as well as a special dedication ceremony for a portrait of former faculty member E.V. “Doc” Regester, who served Darlington School for 28 years. The evening will kick off with a pre-game picnic with entertainment by The Biscuit Burners, followed by the homecoming football game and a centennial fireworks display.
Saturday will begin bright and early with a Golden Tigers Breakfast, honoring alumni who have been out of school for 50 years or more. Following breakfast, visitors may participate in a fun run, centennial golf tournament (reservations required), or alumni tennis match, or they may choose to attend a Town Hall Meeting with Headmaster Tom Whitworth in Morris Chapel.
At noon, the Thornwood ladies are invited back to the Thornwood Campus for a luncheon. There will also be campus tours; individual class photos; an alumni basketball game, hosted by Coaches Jim Van Es, Middle School principal, and David Rhodes, associate headmaster; and a Heritage Society Reception. Festivities will culminate Saturday evening with the Centennial Gala Ball, a black tie affair featuring a sit-down dinner and entertainment by “Rhythm Nation.”
“The weekend will also celebrate the reunions of class years ending in 0 and 5, so several class parties are being planned,” said Ledbetter. “Our class agents are working hard to make their reunions a really great time. They want everyone back for this momentous event.”
The weekend’s activities will conclude Sunday with a Service of Remembrance in Morris Chapel and lunch at noon.
