In conjunction with its sponsorship of Tour de Georgia and its partnership with the Clean Air Campaign, GE Energy is visiting various schools in Tour de Georgia host cities to educate students and encourage their participation in an essay contest.
GE Energy representatives spoke to Darlington’s Middle School students on April 10. During the session, GE employees talked about the physics of cycling, the importance of healthy lifestyles, and every day actions citizens can do to improve the environment.
“We take a sport that is based on physics and break it down to lessons on how the athletes train and improve their performance. This provides an interesting example of science in action, something that the students can reflect upon when the Tour comes into their own town and while they’re riding their bikes outside of school,” said Tom Saddlemire, chief financial officer of GE Energy. “We also address ways to maintain and improve healthy lifestyles for all ages, which is something we hope will resonate with students.”
Additionally, GE’s relationship with the Clean Air Campaign allows the company to promote increased environmental focus, which ties well with their ecomagination initiative. GE Energy’s writing contest, “Habitat Habits,” welcomes students to write an essay or poem about what they’re doing to improve the environment – from recycling, to planting trees on Earth Day, and more. The top three essays will be rewarded with gift certificates to a local bike store, helping promote this environmentally friendly mode of transportation.
