Garden Adds to Lower School Vista

In a collaborative effort with ARAMARK, a Darlington alumnus, a parent volunteer, Lower School second grade teachers Elaine Smith and Lucy Babcock and their classes added a flower garden to the Lower School landscape. Plants and bulbs were purchased by Darlington parent volunteer Colleen Martin, who headed the project. Resources generated through a class recycling project funded the endeavor.
Darlington alumnus Ed Watters ’83 donated the garden plan. After plans were complete, Jack McCord, ARAMARK transportation, security, and grounds manager, and an ARAMARK crew, prepared the bed with topsoil. Martin volunteered her services to help the second graders plant the bulbs and annuals. “We are so grateful to have had such a great partnership with ARAMARK. They even added plants to the bed after we had completed our work and then placed pine straw throughout the bed,” Smith said. “Our class and Mrs. Babcock's will be responsible for the care, watering, and tending of the new garden.”
To raise funds, second grade students and parents turn trash into cash by recycling paper, cardboard, and aluminum. Students receive incentive points for each recycling receipt they bring to school.
