Future Alumni Spotlight: Lily Fowler ('20)

Before the world shifted, the Advancement Office had planned to share senior spotlights on some of the faces of the Class of 2020 and what Darlington means to them. These students represent everything Darlington’s faculty and staff work tirelessly for - our future alumni. 

There has never been a better time to feature our seniors - they deserve the spotlight as the spring they so looked forward to has shifted. This series will feature several Darlington seniors who will share their favorite things about Darlington and also how they are adjusting to this new world of distance learning.

Let’s get to know Lily Fowler (’20), a day student from Rome, Georgia. 

How have you met the challenge of distance learning?

At first it was hard to log on with teachers and classmates through a screen. Distance Learning has not been bad as far as classwork. Doing it in your own time has been a stress reliever. When you have questions, your teacher is one call away. As a senior, I feel spring is the end to life as you know it. Being through a screen, seeing your classmates and teachers, it is hard to close this chapter not being able to end it the traditional way. As time has gone on, I have learned to be thankful for the love and support from the Darlington Community. Heart-filled emails being sent to us everyday has taught us to never take these times for granted.

What’s your favorite song?

I have a lot of favorite songs. One that has stuck with me the most through this time is “O' Lord” by Lauren Daigle.

What’s your favorite thing served in the dining hall?

Cookies!!

What house are you in?

I am in Thornwood! Go TWOOD!

What are you involved in at Darlington (clubs, etc.)?

I am a 4 year letterman in Softball and a 3 year letterman in Lacrosse! I am also in FCA.

If you are in sports who is your favorite coach and why?

I have two, Coach Smyly and Coach Swafford. Coach Smyly because she came the same year I started playing lacrosse. I was very nervous to get out there and try something new. She always reminded me that we were both new at this and we were learning together. It truly made me feel at home. Everyday she pushed me to take what I had learned and do my best at it. Coach Swafford came my senior year. She immediately created personal relationships with us. We struggled with not having a team. That did not stop her from pushing us to do our best and give us the best senior season!

How have you been involved in fine arts?

I have taken art for 3 years.

What is your favorite place on campus and why?

My favorite place is the cove. When it is pretty outside everyone goes to sit outside with friends. We play card games or any other game we can think of. It is great to have time to see people and create new friendships.

Who is your favorite teacher and why?

Mr. Clark. He is fun, relatable, dedicated, and puts his whole heart into his students' education.

Where do you want to go to college and what do you want to do?

I am attending the University of North Georgia at Oconee with plans to transfer to the University of Georgia my sophomore year. I want to major in Business.

If you could name the two new swans what would you name them?

True - meaning Real and Genuine and Tiger - meaning Powerful and Energetic.

If you were given $10,000 to donate where would you donate to and why?

If I was given $10,000 dollars I would donate half to St. Jude for children's research and the other half to a local food kitchen for people to be able to have a meal. I would donate to St. Jude because there are children whose parents may not have the finances to be able to give them the treatment they need and when they need it. Donating to them could save a child's life. I would donate to the local food kitchen because many people are not lucky enough to have 3 meals a day like me. I want to be able to provide people with a meal when they need it.

We have 1,500 donors who give to Darlington every year sure you have a great experience - in 10 words or less how would you thank them?

Thank you. Darlington would not be the amazing place it is without you.

What is your favorite thing about Darlington and why is that important to you?

My favorite thing is how close everyone at Darlington is. It is important to be because we are never forgotten. Each of us has a special place there. No matter what role we have at Darlington, we matter.
