Future Alumni Spotlight: Carisa Brogdon ('20)

 

Before the world shifted, the Advancement Office had planned to share senior spotlights on some of the faces of the Class of 2020 and what Darlington means to them. These students represent everything Darlington’s faculty and staff work tirelessly for - our future alumni. 

There has never been a better time to feature our seniors - they deserve the spotlight as the spring they so looked forward to has shifted. This series will feature several Darlington seniors who will share their favorite things about Darlington and also how they are adjusting to this new world of distance learning.

Let’s get to know Carisa Brogdon (’20), a boarding student from The Bahamas. 

How have you met the challenge of distance learning?

Distance learning is not as bad as I had originally thought it would be, but it challenges us students to be disciplined and keeps us on top of our work. It really helps that the teachers are always there for office hours calls. Personally, I've been making it through distance learning by waking up late, knocking out my school work and then going in the ocean in the evenings with my family.

What’s your favorite song?

I don't really have one song that I like more than any others. I love all types of music!

What’s your favorite thing served in the dining hall?

My favorite meal is french fries and chicken tenders.

What house are you in?

I am in Thornwood House and I am a residential leader.

What are you involved in at Darlington (clubs, etc.)?

I was involved with the Soccer Academy for my first two years and this year I decided to help with the high school varsity and junior varsity teams.

If you are in sports who is your favorite coach and why?

I think that Coach Bradshaw would have to be my favorite coach from my time at Darlington both. I was able to work with her in both Cooper and Thornwood and she is one of my favorite duty staff members. I also got to work with her on the soccer field for both the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons. She’s always a lot of fun and ofcourse I can’t forget about her precious pup Shadow!

How have you been involved in fine arts?

This year was my first time ever taking a Studio Art class and I decided to dive straight into Art 3 but it was amazing and totally worth it. I loved working with Mrs. O'Mara and she has definitely made me into a much better artist!

What is your favorite place on campus and why?

My favorite place on campus would have to be the dorms. There's nothing like living with 30 other girls and building individual bonds with every one of them. I can confidently say that I have met some life long friends here and I'm so glad I got to live just a few doors away from them all!

Who is your favorite teacher and why?

My favorite teachers are Mr. Kinney and Mrs. O'Mara. Both of them are so passionate about what they teach and their classes are always engaging and fun.

Where do you want to go to college and what do you want to do?

I am going to Roger Williams University where I have been accepted into the MBA 4+1 program. I'm planning on studying to get my bachelors in Business Administration with a minor in graphic design.

If you could name the two new swans what would you name them?

I would name them Mike and Tina.

If you were given $10,000 to donate where would you donate to and why?

I would give it to the Arts studio.

We have 1,500 donors who give to Darlington every year sure you have a great experience - in 10 words or less how would you thank them?

I would like to thank them for helping Darlington make such a positive impact on my life.

What is your favorite thing about Darlington and why is that important to you?

My favorite thing about Darlington is the diversity. I think it is so important to be exposed to other kinds of people, religions, cultures and languages. It reminds you to keep an open mind and you can constantly learn new things from the people around you.
