Future Alumni Spotlight: Augusta Wayt (’20)

Before the world shifted, the Advancement Office had planned to share senior spotlights on some of the faces of the Class of 2020 and what Darlington means to them. These students represent everything Darlington’s faculty and staff work tirelessly for - our future alumni. 

There has never been a better time to feature our seniors - they deserve the spotlight as the spring they so looked forward to has shifted. This series will feature several Darlington seniors who will share their favorite things about Darlington and also how they are adjusting to this new world of distance learning.

Let’s get to know Augusta Wayt (‘20), a boarding student from Atlanta, Georgia. 

How have you met the challenge of distance learning? 

Distance learning for me has definitely been a challenge since I’m not on any specific schedule. When I’m at Darlington I have a more structured schedule and a stronger work ethic so that’s why it’s hard to be so far away from school and especially from my friends! Even though I’m not at school for the last months of my senior year, I’m glad that I’m able to spend quality time with my family before I leave for college. I’ve also gotten so much done like cleaning out my whole room and even adopting a kitten.

What’s your favorite song?

My favorite song would have to be “Fire On Fire” by Sam Smith.

What’s your favorite thing served in the dining hall?

My favorite meal that is served in the dining hall is the country fried steak!

Do you have any family that attended Darlington?

My grandfather on my mom’s side attended Darlington and graduated in 1947.

What house are you in and do you hold any leadership positions?

I am in Thornwood House.

What are you involved in at Darlington?

I am involved with Model UN and the Spanish Honors Society/Spanish Club

If you are in sports who is your favorite coach and why?

My favorite coach of all time is Mr. Shorey. He has been my soccer coach for the past four years. I admire how he cares about each individual on the team and makes an effort to play the inexperienced players in every game so that they can have some playing time. He cares more about how our team plays instead of if we win or not.

Are you involved in any fine arts activities?

I am involved in Studio Art with Mrs. O’Mara and I’ve loved every second of it for the last four years.

What is your favorite place on campus and why?

My favorite place on campus is The Growl because I love spending time with my friends playing ping pong. I also have made many memories there from the past years.

Who is your favorite teacher and why?

My favorite teacher is Mr. Marshall. He is very passionate about what he teaches and inspires his students to have a love for Shakespeare and southern literature.

Where do you want to go to college and what do you want to do?

I would like to go to Auburn University and study psychology or health sciences in the biomedical field.

If you could name the two new swans what would you name them?

Darling and Ton

The Darlington Fund raises $1 million every year. If you were given $10,000, what program would you want to give it to and why?

I would want to give this money to the fine arts program because I believe there is much talent in the student body and we have such limited space in the Studio Art room and limited art supplies.

We have 1,500 donors who give to Darlington every year who make sure you have a great experience - how would you thank them?

I am truly thankful for everything they have done and given for me to have such a wonderful experience at Darlington.

What is your favorite thing about Darlington and why is that important to you?

One of my favorite things about Darlington is student diversity. I would have never been able to meet some of the most amazing people if I had gone to a regular school in Atlanta with all American kids. Here at Darlington, I am able to connect with people from all cultures and backgrounds and I feel so blessed to have that opportunity.
