From the Desk of the Lower School Director - 3

Aug 24, 2010 3:27 PM

By Steve Bartholomew - FF/S

The first week of school went very smoothly. We welcomed 47 new students with a total enrollment of 159. Thank you for your patience with the carpool lines. Please plan on arriving no more than 10 minutes before dismissal to avoid gridlock on Shorter Avenue and Horseleg Creek Road. As a reminder, have your car rider sign visible on the passenger visor with the family name facing the front of the vehicle. Younger students with older siblings will be picked up at the Thornwood Administration Building.

Back to School Night, a special event for parents only, is scheduled to take place Tuesday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. in Tiger Hall. The meeting in Tiger Hall will take approximately 30-40 minutes and then parents will be dismissed to the individual classrooms for a formal presentation by the teachers. At 6:20 p.m., the enrichment teachers will be available in Tiger Hall to speak with you about their programs. We will also have Tiger Pride committee sign-up sheets and information on the Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program, Sally Foster gift wrap sales, and the Costa Rica spring trip.

Class and yearbook photos will be taken Tuesday, Aug. 31, starting with pre-K at 8:30 a.m. in the Thornwood Building. All students should wear their purple knit shirts and khaki bottoms (your choice of shorts, long pants or skorts). Pre-K through first grade girls can wear their plaid jumpers with the Peter Pan collared white blouses, if they choose. Second grade girls may also wear their khaki jumpers. Parents will receive a packet of photos about three weeks later and will have a choice of purchasing them at that time.

Tiger Pride invites all of our families to the Pigskin Picnic at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3, the night of Darlington’s first home football game. Reservations are being taken in the school office.  The cost is $9/person.

The Sally Foster gift wrap sale is well underway. There are three simple steps in ordering. All purchases will be mailed directly to the buyer’s home with the exception of the cookie dough, which is shipped directly to the Lower School. Always use the school’s account number when ordering – 931094. All students involved in selling the gift cards must be registered online at www.sallyfoster.com. Once your child is registered, he or she can track all purchases and determine the incentive to be received for his or her efforts. Seller ID # has to be noted when selling the gift cards. If your child  does not sell any gift cards, the order becomes the  tracking method. Thank you for your participation and support with this fundraiser.

Eighteen fourth-grade students joined the Safety Patrol Program this year. You will see them in the Primary Circle, at the Thornwood Administration Building, and at the two crossing areas on campus.

Starting in September, every Wednesday will be a Late Start Day. The first Wednesday of the month will be for an all-school faculty meeting on the main campus. The other Wednesdays of the month will be for team/department/faculty meetings on our campus. Students will report directly to their classrooms on these days (not to Tiger Hall). Special thanks to Lauren Sklar and other Tiger Pride members who are providing supervision for our students.
