Happy New Year! I hope 2011 is a happy, healthy and prosperous year for all of our families and friends.
On behalf of the faculty and staff, I would to thank our families for their kindness and generous support of the three holiday outreach projects – Toys for Tots, the Warm Clothing Drive and Angel Tree Project. Zegie Hilliard, counselor at McHenry Primary School, sends heartfelt thanks for the generosity shown to the students and families at her school.
I would also like to thank our parent volunteers who decorated Tiger Hall for the Christmas Feast and the stage for the Christmas performances.
Sixteen fourth-grade students qualified this year for the Duke University Talent Search Program (TIP). Students who scored at the 95th percentile or higher on selected subtests of a recent achievement test qualify for this recognition. Duke University identifies students with outstanding academic abilities and offers motivational and informational resources through publications and outline opportunities. This program is available to students who attend school within Duke University’s 16-state region. Letters were sent home today to parents whose children qualified for the program. The National Geographic Bee will take place on Friday, Jan. 14, for grades 3-8. Students must qualify to participate. The competition will take place in the Lower School gym starting at 1:30 p.m. Parents and friends are cordially invited to attend. There will be 36 students competing (six from each grade).
Please mark your calendar for Light Up the Night on Thursday, Jan. 20, from 7 to 9 p.m. The Teaching and Learning Center, the Admission Office, and our faculty and staff have partnered to offer this program for our families and friends. This evening is dedicated to excellence in education and the work our teachers are doing at the Lower School. Our teachers will demonstrate best practices in education and share their passion for teaching and learning. In addition to meeting with the classroom teachers, our families will also visit the next grade for their children. This incredible evening will include the work of our wonderful enrichment teachers. We encourage our families to bring a friend or two to this event.
