French students stay busy during the holiday season

French students immersed themselves in foreign culture during the month of December, as they learned about French holiday traditions.
“Students in French 2H, 3 and 3H worked on decorating Christmas trees that represent francophone countries or regions,” said Nathalie Nicolay-Welch, French teacher. “The trees are in my classroom, and pictures are on the Web.”
French 4H students judged the trees, and the tree from the French Antilles, decorated by Jenni Ryan and Julia Douglas (French 3), won first place. Second place went to the tree from Provence, decorated by Will Santoro, Ross Rhoades, Julia Watt and Michelle-Marie Picon.
All of these students also made Buches de Noel, traditional French Christmas cakes that resemble Yule logs, for the French Club Christmas party. The cakes were judged according to the following criteria: resemblance to a log, neatness, creativity and overall attractiveness.
Students in French Club are also proud of sponsoring two charities, Medecine Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) and Angel Flight.
According to Welch, Doctors Without Borders is a non-profit organization that brings medical relief to disaster areas (war, earthquake, famine, etc.)
“Doctors give their time and expertise to people in need, and the money we give goes toward medicine and equipment,” she said. “Angel Flight is also a non-profit organization, and provides pilots and planes for emergency trips. Pilots give their time and plane(s) to help families in need of emergency surgery. The money we give goes toward the cost of fuel.”
