Fourth graders read and relax during DEAR

Each Wednesday, at the Lower School, students drop everything and read (DEAR) from l -1:30p.m. “This activity has become a tradition at the School. Mark Tayloe [Lower School principal] began this several years ago,” Lola Bradshaw, fourth-grade teacher, said. “On occasions, the students go outside, find a comfortable space, and read for 30 minutes.” With the weather being so accommodating this fall, the fourth graders ventured onto the playground adjacent to their room on a recent Wednesday to read during DEAR period.
During this thirty-minute period, everyone at the school – students, teachers, and staff – participate in DEAR. The students, for the most part, choose what they would like to read as long as the material meets the criteria established in the guidelines of the program. Lower School Librarian Ann Glass coordinates the program.
