Fourth-Graders Explore Capitol, Cyclorama, and Civil War

Reatha Carroll and Lola Bradshaw's fourth grade students took a trip to the Capitol and to the Cyclorama in Atlanta on March 27. This excursion was the conclusion of a study in social studies of the northern and southern states and their involvement in the Civil War.
The first stop after arriving at the Capitol was to see an educational film that explained that the Capitol was constructed with materials from Georgia. After the film, the tour guide led them to Gov. Barnes’ office across the street where they were able to see pictures of past governors. While visiting the House and Senate Chambers, they learned about the process of how our representatives vote on bills.
The Cyclorama was next on their agenda. The Cyclorama is a re-creation in painting and plastic figures of the Civil War. The students were seated on a rotating platform and told the story of the war fought in Georgia and about the burning of Atlanta.
Of course no trip would be complete without a stop at the gift shop where students purchased replicas of bullets used in the war, penny whistles, and Scarlett O'Hara paper-dolls.
