Fourth Graders Dig Study

Combining science with social studies, Darlington fourth graders visited Chieftains Museum on Thursday, Oct. 5 to participate in "Archaeology and the Georgia Cherokees," a class taught by Dr. John E. Worth, director of programs for the Coosawattee Foundation. From the Upper School campus, Craig Schmidt, history department chair, joined the group to share his knowledge.
Students learned the history of the oldest residence in Floyd County, now known as Chieftains Museum, and the Cherokee Indians in Georgia by watching a slide presentation, touring the museum and the excavation sites around the house, and sorting artifacts found on the property. Afterward, students discussed why each team chose certain methods of sorting and grouping.
