Fourth-grade play teaches some life lessons

Darlington fourth graders celebrated the importance of showing good character by performing a musical called Straight from the Heart. The play is designed to encourage discussion among elementary students about the many complex issues members of society face today.
Songs in the musical, including this World, Break Down the Walls, Spread Some Sunshine, If There’s a Problem, Try to Imagine, and Straight from the Heart, carried a special message that the students interpreted through words, motion, dance, and drama. For example, Break Down the Walls helped students recognize that people can live together in peace and harmony if they respect the differences they have. Spread Some Sunshine encouraged students to create a friendly atmosphere. If There’s a Problem helped students learn how to compromise. Try to Imagine talked about the value of community service.
Students wore printed T-shirts with the logo, “Having Good Character is Cool at Darlington Lower School.” The play was performed at McHenry Elementary and excerpts were performed for the opening ceremonies for Rome’s Heritage Holidays.
