Fourth grade makes annual trek to capitol

Each year, the fourth grade travels to Atlanta to visit the capitol as part of their study of the branches of government. This year they were able to meet with Senator Preston Smith, whose son Preston is in Darlington’s fourth grade.
Senator Smith took the students into the office of Governor Sonny Pardue and then gave them the opportunity to sit in the House and Senate desks. He explained how a bill becomes a law, using the example of the bill being considered this year to ban smoking by adults with small children in the car.
"The children were in awe of the spacious capitol, the beauty of the gold dome, and the duties of our representatives. Of course the highlight of the day was having their group picture made with the Governor and eating at the Varsity," Reatha Dempsey, fourth grade language arts teacher, said.
