Fourth grade brings in the experts

Mark Gibbons, Upper School math teacher, visited Lola Bradshaw's fourth grade math class on October 4, and taught a lesson on geometric structures. The class was divided into groups, given 80 straws, and asked to design a structure strong enough to stand. The challenge was to be the group to build the tallest free-standing structure and win the design contest. The students were very excited to participate in this activity that related to their study of geometry. and were thrilled to have Gibbons direct them on this challenge in math. They anxiously await another visit and another lesson.
On October 8, Wright Ledbetter, Upper School campaign director visited the fourth grade classes as a guest of Jamie Vincent. Ledbetter brought pictures from his trips to Cuba and the students learned about his trips to Cuba and how he captures the images of people on camera. Students were also explained how the camera works, and waiting for just the right minute to capture on film an image of a lifetime. Ledbetter showed the students his edition of Cuba: Tomorrow in Question and presented each of the three classrooms with a copy, as well as presenting each student with a print of one of his pictures.
