Former chaplain and coach dies at 75

Rev. Jack E. Fuqua Sr., former Darlington School chaplain and coach, died Feb. 7, 2008 in Augusta, Ga., at the age of 75.
After high school, Fuqua earned a baseball scholarship to David Lipscomb University in his birthplace of Nashville, Tenn. There he received a bachelor's degree and realized his desire to be a high school teacher and coach. He went on to earn a Master of Arts in Secondary School Administration from Peabody-Vanderbilt University.
At age 46, Fuqua felt the call to ministry, and in 1981, he graduated in from Vanderbilt (Oberlin) School of Divinity with a Master of Divinity in Pastoral Counseling. He later obtained a Doctorate of Theology and was ordained as a Baptist Pastor by First Baptist Church in Nashville. He then became pastor at Woodlawn Baptist Church in Rome, Ga., where he also served Darlington School as chaplain, coach and Bible teacher. While at Darlington, he established the school's first counseling program.
In 1989, Fuqua began working with Equifax Inc. and joined the Martinez United Methodist Church. He was asked by a district superintendent to serve as a part-time local paster for a circuit of three churches in Warren County.
At age 63, he returned to Seminary and was ordained as an elder in the United Methodist Church. Fuqua became pastor at Burns United Methodist Church in 1995, where he stayed until his retirement in 1999. One year later, he was appointed to serve White Oak United Methodist Church in Appling, Ga., for the next four years.
He returned to Buns Memorial United Methodist Church to serve as pastor emeritus at the time of his death. Funeral services were held there on Feb. 10, 2008. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Burns Memorial United Methodist Church 2372 Lumpkin Road, Augusta, Ga., 30906.
Fuqua was preceded in death by his son, Jack. He is survived by his wife, Anita; three sons, Jennings, William and Robert; three grandchildren, Margaret Anne, Jessica and Gabrielle; and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.
