Football players volunteer with Community Kitchen

Darlington’s varsity football team has been living its new motto this summer, as players give back to the community by volunteering with the Community Kitchen.
“Our team motto this year is, ‘Out of myself and into the team,’” said Tommy Atha, head coach. “We’re trying to emphasize the importance of putting others before yourself.”
A group of players were split this morning between unloading food at South Broad United Methodist Church and a storage area at Rebecca Blaylock Child Development Center. Today, the volunteers were preparing to unload about 4,000 pounds of food.
“Most of the time, it can run from 3,000 to 5,000 pounds each month from the Atlanta Community Food Bank,” said Lisa Stuenkel, volunteer coordinator. “That is one of the hardest things. A lot of our volunteers are older, so when it comes to the heavy labor, it is such a blessing to have them here.”
The food is kept in the storage areas and then sent in intervals to the Floyd County Community Kitchen on North Broad. The kitchen averages feeding 150 on a light day and up to 200 meals everyday, says Stuenkel.
“It’s nice to help the needy around Rome,” said Ivy Duggan, a sophomore. “When you have so much, it’s just nice to give back.”
