First grade Pow Wow a success

Each year during the Thanksgiving season, first grade teachers Anne Somerville and Gayle Monk coordinate an outdoor Indian Pow Wow for the first and second grades. This year’s event was held Tuesday, Nov. 16.
“Parents oversaw the building of teepees, a campfire and five learning stations,” said Monk. “First grade students, dressed in full Indian costume, rotated through the learning centers, learning how to plant corn the Indian way (with real fish), make colorful Indian bead jewelry, decorate totem poles and tom-toms with symbols and feathers and play Indian games.”
Second grade students, dressed as Pilgrims, then joined the first graders for Cherokee stories told by Jane Cunningham, local storyteller. Afterwards, first and second grade parents treated all the students to an authentic feast.
