Fifth graders study world religions

As part of social studies, the fifth grade at Darlington Lower School is learning about world religions.
“We are focusing on Hinduism, Islam and Buddhism,” said Carol Mitchell, fifth grade teacher. “Using literature and resources from the Peace Village, students are learning the basic tenants of these religions and becoming familiar with shrines, prayers for peace and the Golden Rule associated with each of the religions.”
Students conduct research, write papers and present their work to the class.
In the study of Hinduism, small groups researched the sacred writings, the divinities, the six schools of philosophy, the caste system, reincarnation and karma, as well as worship in the home and in temples and worship of saints. They also decorated mandalas, which are graphic symbols of the universe.
Dr. Shalini Reddy, the mother of fifth grader Avani, spoke to the group about her family’s religion.
“The goal of teaching this is to give students a better understanding and tolerance of religious differences,” said Mitchell. “Children need to be able to accept and be considerate of the differences of others in our diverse, global society.”
