Fifth grade instructors Flo Anthony, Perree Collier, and Carol Mitchell are bringing the study of colonial America to life for their students through commercials. Students are focusing on the need for labor particularly on southern plantations and developing commercials to convince British people to come to American to become indentured servants to work on the plantations.

“The students are working in small groups to make a video commercial to advertise for indentured servants,” Mitchell said. Each group has a planter, a planter’s wife, male and female indentured servants, a narrator, and possibly a planter’s child.

“The videos are great. They had to be historically accurate, give the benefits for working as an indentured servant, and tell about the lifestyle and the recreational activities in the area,” Mitchell said.
