Fifth graders continue service tradition

Each year, fifth graders at Darlington School work together on a community service project that they help choose. This year, the class decided to help the Rome/Floyd County Humane Society by collecting donated goods and helping with the Society’s special Cat Adoption Day in September. Students spent a week collecting dry pet foods, litter, leashes, pet toys, and other items needed by the animals at the Humane Society.
After collecting the items, the student volunteers helped their teachers Flo Anthony and Carroll Mitchell load their cars, deliver the goods, and then the students returned to the Society’s office to volunteer their time on Saturday, Sept. 13.
Each student worked one or two-hour shifts selling items and collecting donations. “When they weren’t busy loading donated goods or selling t-shirts, they got to play with Felix and Jasper, two of the many cats there,” Anthony said. “The day was very productive and fun for the students. They are already planning to return next month with the class to help with the Humane Society’s Dog Adoption Day.”
