Fakhri named Noon Optimist Student of the Month

Outstanding academic achievement has won senior Nasir Fakhri the honor of being named the Noon Optimist Student of the Month for September.
Fakhri, who is ranked No. 2 in his class of 117, has a GPA of 101.28 and an SAT score of 1410. In his four years at the Upper School, he has earned 10 honors and 11 AP credits.
“I had the privilege of helping Nasir prepare for his Governor’s Honors Program interviews last spring, and have been his instructor for AP statistics this year,” said Robert McGraw, mathematics instructor and community service coordinator. “He has shown himself to be a serious student of mathematics with a very good grasp of mathematical theory and notation.”
Rick Buice, chairman of the technology department, calls Fakhri one of the best students he has taught in his 35 years of education. “He asks penetrating questions, his methods are exacting and logical and his efforts are tireless,” said Buice. “His endeavors have earned him the respect of both faculty and peers.”
Fakhri has been awarded the E.L. Wright Scholastic Award in ancient world history, biology, English I, geometry, English II and algebra II. He has earned the Yale Book Award and has twice received the Class Scholarship Award. Fakhri, a Furman Scholar, is a member of the National Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta.
During his four years at Darlington, he has been a member of varsity Scholar Bowl, captain of the Mathlete and Science Bowl Teams, a member of the Student Support Team (SST), community service prefect, assistant editor of the “Darlingtonian” and a mentor at McHenry Elementary School.
While he is obviously very focused on academics, Fakhri has also made time for several extracurricular activities, including varsity cross-country, tennis, varsity track and field, the Chess, Impact, Environmental Awareness and Spanish Clubs, the Young Democrats, “Y” Cabinet and Leadership Rome. Outside of school, he is a member of the Head Council of the Zainabia Islamic Youth Association (ZIYA) and captain and second-degree black belt on the World Tae Kwon Do Federation sparring team.
“I first got to know Nasir when he was the day community service prefect for his House. In this capacity, he was responsible for planning and coordinating community service projects,” said McGraw. “I had many occasions to observe first hand the giving heart that this young man possesses. He worked with the Communities in Schools program as a mentor to an elementary student at a neighborhood school. In addition, he was involved with a variety of other projects through his House.”
