Reading Poetry: Upper School English instructor Matthew Kearney and former Darlington English instructor Rena Patton, now teaching in Savannah, shared their poetry at Schroeder’s New Deli April 23. The poetry reading was a part of “A Weekend for Writers,” sponsored by Rome Area Council for the Arts (RACA). Kearney also presented poems at a bilingual poetry reading also sponsored by RACA at El Zarape restaurant April 22.


Faculty Article Published: The Council for Basic Education has published a collection of academic works, Minds Alive, which includes “The Humanization of Chemistry: Models of Writing,” a paper written by Mark Alber, chairman of science department, and Rena Patton.


Teacher Publishes Poetry: Matthew Kearney’s poems will be in print, thanks to D & R Canal Poetry Press, which will publish a volume of his poems entitled Going Native this summer. Two poems by Kearney will also appear in print soon: “As If Life Passes” is being published in Blood and Fire Review, and “Terrorism” will be published in The Old Red Kimono.


Poet Laureate Connects with Darlingtonians: Matthew Kearney and senior Sara Baldauf-Wagner attended a poetry reading by poet laureate Robert Pinsky at Berry College April 6. Pinsky was inducted into the Creative Arts Society, which was founded by long-time Darlington supporter, if he’s not an alumnus George Wallis. “It’s rare to hear someone speak so eloquently about contemporary poetry,” Kearney said. “This was especially thrilling because Pinsky attended Rutgers University where I went to school and taught at Wellesly College where Sara Baldauf-Wagner has been accepted.”


Tracy Rucker Recognized: Tracy Rucker, Middle School and Upper School French instructor, will be highlighted in an admission publication of the University of the South (Sewanee), from which he graduated. Only five alumni are being selected.
