Eyewitnesses bring World War II to Life for Seventh-Graders

Michael Wroebel, originally from Poland, whose parents were in concentration camps during World War II, spoke to seventh-graders to culminate their study of The Diary of Anne Frank, Monday, Jan. 17. During the study students read and reported from either a fiction or nonfiction book of their choice, dealing with the war.
“Students have been so enthusiastic with this study,” said Middle School English instructor Nancy Ivester. “They brought in interesting visual aids and guest speakers. Mary Kate Watters shared a Nazi uniform belonging to her grandmother, who was dating an American soldier who shot a Nazi soldier and mailed his uniform to her for safe-keeping. He was to get it back after the war, but was killed in the war.
“Bert Collier’s grandfather, Red Collier, came from Gadsden, Ala., to speak to Bert’s class about his experiences in the Marines in the Pacific. All of these shared experiences bring this time in history to life.”
