Everyday Math produces extraordinary scores

Mark Tayloe, Lower School principal, announces that last year Lower School students achieved noticeably higher ERB scores compared to previous yearss. “Before we introduced Everyday Math into the Lower School curriculum, our median scores on the quantitative ability section of the ERB test usually fluctuated between the 85th and 88th percentile nationally,” Tayloe said. This past school year, students achieved the following median scores: third grade, 95th percentile; fourth grade, 94th percentile, and fifth grade, 92nd percentile.
“A particularly impressive note is that this past school year’s fifth graders had a median score in the 73rd percentile as fourth graders, but raised their median score 19 percentage points to achieve this past school year’s 92nd percentile,” Tayloe noted.
The quantitative ability section tests the higher level thinking skills, for example compare/contrast of weights, measures, and amounts, geometry and geometrical terminology, exponents, solving higher level problems, algebraic thinking, reading graphs, and interpreting data. “Our students learn to solve problems in different ways with different algorithms, and they are also familiar when essentially the same problem presented to them in a different form,” Tayloe said.
