E.V. “Doc” Regester Annual Fund Campaign raises over $1.1 million

Darlington School is pleased to announce that the 2003-2004 Annual Fund eclipsed the $1 million mark for the fifth consecutive year. Led by Dr. Bob Harbin (‘67) and a record number of volunteers, over $1.1 million was raised.
“This year for fundraising at Darlington reminds me of an old African proverb, ‘Smooth seas do not good sailors make.’ Darlington School was not immune to the challenges facing many non-profits in this uncertain economy,” said Joe Montgomery, vice president for institutional advancement. “However, we emerge stronger for it, and better prepared to weather rough seas when they come our way. Darlington’s continuing success can be attributed to engaged volunteer leadership, strong Board commitment and a dedicated team of development professionals, led this past year by Mollie Avery, recently retired vice president for development.”
According to Montgomery, recent reports indicate that charitable giving to education in the United States declined this year for the first time since consecutive drops in 1974 and 1975, when double-digit inflation was rampant. “The culprits are declining stock values, conflicts abroad, a raft of corporate woes, just to name a few,” he said. “In the face of this, Darlington School has had another good year for fundraising and remains in the top tier of independent schools in its peer group.” Annual gifts were down six percent from the previous year.
This year’s Annual Fund campaign honored E.V. “Doc” Regester. Regester served Darlington School for 28 years as associate headmaster, English instructor, English department chair, director of counseling and guidance and editor of the first alumni publication. He and his wife, Juliana, who was the School’s postmistress, helped compile the first alumni records.
Regester said lending his name to the Annual Fund was an opportunity to repay, to some extent, what Darlington had provided for him and his family. “I have grown professionally through my experiences at Darlington, and my family benefited greatly from being a part of and participating in the life of the School,” he said.
Since its inception in 1968, Darlington School’s National Annual Fund Program has appealed to members of its extended family to make an investment in the School’s students and faculty with gifts to the annual campaign. Donations to the Annual Fund provide for: innovative and challenging academic, athletic and arts programs; increased leadership opportunities for students; recruitment of highly talented faculty; student scholarships; small class sizes designed to give teachers the opportunity to provide individual attention; and much more.
