ELA-8 Students Accept the Library's Summer Reading Challenge

This summer, the ELA-8 library challenged Darlington students to read above and beyond the requirements of their summer homework. For the second year in a row, we invited all rising Darlington ELA-8th grade students to participate in a special reading incentive program that lasted from May to August.

Students were asked to keep track of the number of days over the summer when they read for at least 20 minutes. There were no restrictions on the type of reading that students could count toward the program; fiction and nonfiction books, picture books and chapter books, short stories, comic books and graphic novels, poetry books, arts & crafts books, magazines, and newspapers could all be included in the students’ reading logs.

Students were told that they could earn prizes for the number of days of reading they completed, including a Tiger Day (dress down day), a goody bag, and a pizza party. All participating students will receive their prizes over the next few weeks. The Tiger Day for all students who read at least 30 days will be on Friday, September 5th. One grand prize winner will be selected from the pool of students who read at least 60 days this summer. That person will receive a $50 gift card to either Barnes and Noble, iTunes, Starbucks, Jandy’s, or sweetFROG (winner’s choice).
