Eighth graders attend Girls Going Places Entrepreneurship Conference

Thirteen of Darlington Middle School’s eighth grade girls attended the Girls Going Places Entrepreneurship Conference at Berry College Tuesday, Oct. 26.
The conference, sponsored by Peachtree Planning Corporation and The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, was designed to encourage financial literacy and help girls learn more about starting businesses and managing personal finances. Adult facilitators, selected among successful local businesswomen and Peachtree Planning’s Women in Management Committee, shared their experiences and answered questions in group discussions.
“This event offers girls an experience that will stimulate their interest in pursuing enterprising careers and developing financial acumen,” said Rob Harbison, of Peachtree Planning Corporation.
The conference began with a short opening discussion titled “What is Economic Power for Teen Women?” followed by a board game that introduced participants to the vocabulary, history and creative problem solving of business ownership. Next, they watched a 17-minute video highlighting three young women entrepreneurs and their successes and challenges in establishing and running businesses.
After the video, the students had the opportunity to interview their conference mentors. They then participated in an interactive group activity in which they created or invented a new product and wrote a mini business plan.
Following this activity, participants developed their own Entrepreneurial Coat of Arms through an introspective activity encouraging them to individually describe things they are proud of, the one thing they would never change their mind about, the dream they have about themselves, what leadership means to them, what business means to them and what business they can imagine doing themselves.
Students then learned about the Girls Going Places Scholarship Program through a video highlighting last year’s winners. According to The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, the company awards college scholarships to girls ages 12 to 16 who demonstrate budding entrepreneurship, are taking the first steps toward financial independence and are making a difference in their school and communities. Scholarship prizes totaling $30,000 are awarded among three top winners and 12 finalists.
