Developing Lifelong Readers

As a child, I was immersed in books. We had them in our home and we got even more from the public library. In fact, I used to play “library” at home, putting pockets in my books and checking them out to my sisters. I loved keeping reading logs as I participated in the Summer Reading programs at the library. I have nostalgic feelings about some of those favorite books from my childhood: Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, The Little House, The Mitten, Harry the Dirty Dog, Nancy Drew mysteries, and the Eddie and Betsy books by Carolyn Haywood.
When I became a parent, I was excited to pass on this love of literature, reading to my children from their infancy on. They continue to love reading and often recommend books for me to read.
The Darlington library program strongly desires to help you, as parents, promote the love of reading in your children. We seek to provide positive enriching experiences with reading by providing quality literature, featuring a collection of over 27,000 titles, including a special section just for grades K4 through 2. Librarians are available to assist students in finding a “just right” book.
The library services page has several resources available on our website page, including a new feature this year called “DarReads.” By selecting this tab, you as parents can see what books your children have checked out and can discuss these books with them. You may be surprised to see them reading some of your childhood favorites as well as some newer classics. We have several books that are the basis of new movies, which is great for those who want to “read it before they see it!”
