Design Student Spotlight: Seidy Pichardo ('24)

Seidy Pichardo ('24) is an accomplished actress and an involved member of The Darlington Players. Her most recent project involved working on the costume design for the fall play, "12 Angry Jurors." Hear more from Seidy in her interview below.

What do you like the most about the design process?

I like being able to take an idea and transform it into something tangible. I’m one of the first student costume designers in the theater department, and having the opportunity to really know the actors I was designing costumes for on a personal level made the process all the more enjoyable.

What do you look to for inspiration?

It depends on the project I’m working on, but I’m a big supporter of collages so I would say I take inspiration from anything I feel connects most with the show's aesthetic. I also take inspiration from the actors and how they portray their characters.

What is the most challenging part of designing in your world?

Determination and patience. Designs never look the way you expect them to be there’s always something you can fix and even when it’s done something can go wrong so keeping calm and staying the course was a major challenge at times.

What experiences have you had as a result of working through this design process with projects at Darlington or how has it benefited you?

This is the first design opportunity I’ve been granted, but it’s opened new doors for me since I’m going to be an assistant designer for the upcoming lower school musical, "Lion King Jr.," which I’m very excited for. It’s really allowed me to experience all that goes into a show from a different perspective and fall in love with theatre all over again.
