This year we have over 30 new students thanks to the Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program. Each new student has a wonderful story to share about Darlington. However, I want to share only one with you today.

Before I became the Darlington spokesperson for GOAL, I had the opportunity to substitute teach one of the math classes at the Upper School. I met a young lady who sat in the front row. She made quite an impression on me. She listened and participated attentively in class and even thanked me on my last day of substituting. Although I could not remember her name, she often stopped to speak or give me a hug.

Over the summer, I was working at the front desk in the Admission Office when a lady walked in to re-enroll her daughter in Darlington. We talked and she wanted me to meet her daughter, who happened to be a GOAL recipient. I walked outside and the young lady from math class was standing there. She told her mom that I had substituted for one of her classes. She gave me a big hug and thanked me for helping her attend Darlington.

If you haven’t already heard about the Georgia GOAL Scholarship program, it works like this. Georgia residents or anyone who pays state taxes in this state can redirect their Georgia state tax dollars to help fund tuition assistance for students entering a participating independent school. The donation to GOAL qualifies for a charitable tax deduction on your federal tax return and will also generate a tax credit on your Georgia tax return. It’s a win-win!

I have seen firsthand the impact the Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program is making in the classrooms at Darlington. I want to thank the many of you who have redirected your Georgia tax dollars to help these students be here. For those of you who are interested in participating, the deadline for submitting your application to the Department of Revenue is Nov. 12
