Darlington to host First Lego League Tournament

Darlington School and the Dar Bots robotics team will host the First Lego League Regional Qualifier Tournament Saturday, Dec. 12, at the Middle School.
“Darlington School is proud to demonstrate our commitment to innovation in science and technology to the northwest Georgia community,” said Owen Kinney, Upper School science teacher and Dar Bots adviser. “This event will bring over 200 students and parents to our campus. We are joining a world-wide network of over 75,000 First Lego League (FLL) volunteers that collectively provide opportunities for over 100,000 students to put real world engineering skills to work. Now tech-savvy students from our area schools can experience FLL, and hopefully we can help bring robotics to a broader group of young people.”

Ten members of Darlington’s robotics team, which includes students in grades 4-8, will compete in the tournament. Several of the students on this year’s team competed in a similar tournament last year in Atlanta, where they earned a second-place finish in the Teamwork category and learned a great deal about performing under pressure.

The theme of the Dec. 12 tournament is “SmartMove” and the focus is transportation.

“The 2009 SmartMove challenge is quite tricky, and our kids are working hard to make their robot successful in the competition,” Kinney said. “In addition to the robot portion of the tournament, our team is presenting a carpooling project that they undertook this fall to decrease drop off/pick up traffic at the Middle School. I am very proud of the perseverance that has brought our team success over the past few years. We are all looking forward to hosting our first FLL tournament, and we hope that people will come out to see what all the excitement is about.”
First Lego League was founded in 1989 to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology. The organization aims to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills; inspire innovation; and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication and leadership.
