Darlington Takes First in Region 6-A Literary Meet

While most students were soaking in the sun during Darlington’s spring break, a small group of students competed in the Region 6-A literary meet March 10 at Floyd College. The group won first place.
“Region competition is always difficult for Darlington because the event is held during our spring break,” Choral Director Dan Bishop said. “This means that all of the musical participants have to return to campus on Thursday before the competition on Friday. This also means that the singers have seven days in which they have no practice.
“We also had a last minute replacement in Girl’s Solo and Girl’s Trio,” Bishop added. “Considering all of these obstacles, it is very impressive that the entire literary team placed first in the region.”
Bishop, Thatcher Chair of English David Powell, and Darlington Players adviser Marisa Ortega led the group.
Adam Richardson won third place in the Boy’s Solo competition, and Leslie Leddy placed third in Girl’s Solo.
The Boy’s Quartet, comprising Adam Richardson, Luke Farmer, Allen Babcock, and Spencer Warren, took first in the region, and went on to achieve first place in the State A competitions.
Raul Gonzalez participated in the Boy’s Spelling section and Boy’s Essay, taking first in the region in both events and first and fourth place, respectively, in the state competition.
Kelli Gavant entered the Girl’s Essay competition, where she finished second in the region. The Girl’s Spelling representative, Catherine Lawler, won third place in the region.
Other students competing in the region meet included Leslie Leddy, Erin Pridgen, and Tameka Hawkins (Girl’s Trio); Josh Graham (Extemporaneous Speaking); and Morgan McCrary and Allen Babcock (Dramatic Interpretation)
“The competition was tough, but that’s not what mattered; it was also a lot of fun,” Raul Gonzalez commented.
