Darlington supports Star 94 Cares for Kids Radiothon

Darlington School helped raise more than $2,000 for Star 94 radio station’s second annual Cares for Kids Radiothon, which supports Atlanta’s premiere non-profit children’s hospitals.
“We turned in $2,180.61 and managed to qualify it for a match by Kohl’s department store, which will double it for a total of $4,400,” said Darlington parent Dr. Laurie Johnson, who coordinated the effort. “Hooray for all of the wonderful students, faculty, administrators, parents and grandparents. I was shocked and saddened that Darlington was the only school to scramble and make a gift. Thanks so much for scrambling.
“I think that it is so crucial that our community internalizes the belief that we are given much, in order to share much,” she said. “What a lasting joy that generates.”
In just three days, the radiothon, hosted by Star 94’s Steve and Vikki (morning show hosts) and Cindy and Ray (afternoon show hosts), raised over $1.1 million for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite and Egleston. According to Star 94’s Web site, the radio station heard and was inspired by the miraculous stories of many courageous children and their families who have experienced the great care provided by these hospitals. Star 94 listeners responded with a record-setting $1,167,833. All donations will be kept in Atlanta and used for patient care.
“Also, the patients, parents, staff and Star 94 crew loved the artwork and get well notes that every Darlington Lower School student contributed,” said Johnson. “I took the liberty to address some pictures to specific patients who were interviewed in proximity of us. We also got them to read [pre-first grader] William Groover’s unmatchable note of encouragement on the air. Now there is an amazing fellow we are so lucky to have as a student at DLS.”
Lower School Principal Mark Tayloe said a letter was sent home to all parents Thursday, Nov. 4, and that students responded very positively and enthusiastically. The radiothon was held over the following three days.
“[I want to thank] all teachers for letting me speak to their classes, often twice. I know that meant a scramble in their schedules, but it meant the world to me to be able to sensitize the kids to the needs and feelings of hospitalized children and families,” said Johnson. “The students were so loving and so eager to give. Their parents can be so, so proud of their beautiful, compassionate spirits.
“I especially salute [fifth grader] Jonathan Tierney and his cool parents, John and Liz,” she continued. “When I spoke to his class, his hand immediately shot up and he offered me his personal money, making the first donation. He is the most amazing deep-hearted, empathetic fellow.”
Johnson went on to thank faculty and staff members David Rhodes, Mark Tayloe, Diane Lumpkin, Diane Ogletree, Renee Healy, Debbie White and Dot Womack and Darlington parent Molly Yancey for their support and assistance in coordinating the fund-raising project between all three Darlington campuses.
“I was so blessed to be a facilitator of this effort,” said Johnson. “I can't wait to see what we can raise next year.”
