Darlington students excel in national tests

Seniors Melissa Jarrell, Rome, Ga., and William Krueger, Trion, Ga., are semifinalists in the competition for Merit Scholarship awards to be offered in 2003. More than one million students took the 2001 PSAT/NMSQT last October and entered the National Merit Program, a privately financed nationwide competition for recognition and awards conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). In late April, the 50,000 highest scorers were offered NMSC’s College Plans Reporting Service through their schools. Some 16,000 of those high performers were designated semifinalists on a state representational basis. Semifinalists are the only program participants who have an opportunity to advance in the Merit Scholarship competition.
The following seniors were named commended students in the Merit Scholarship competition: Kathleen Adams, Melissa Brass, Garrett Manis, all of Rome, Ga., and Padrick Dennis, Pass Christian, Miss.
The College Board has recognized twenty-two Class of 2002 members as AP Scholars in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level AP Exams. The Advanced Placement Program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school, and to receive college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the end-of-course AP Exams. Almost 14 percent of the more than 900,000 high school students in 14,000 secondary schools worldwide who took AP Exams in May 2002 performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar.
One student, Nasreen Fahkri ’02, Rome, Ga. qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a 5-point scale on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.
Five qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. These students are: Nasreen Fakhri ’02, Porter Leslie ’02, and Sarah Rhodes ’02, all of Rome, Ga., and T.G. Bertoli ’02, Powder Springs, Ga.; Dax Griggs ’02, Cartersville, Ga.
Eleven qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. These students are: Melissa Brass ’03, Mary Kathryn Harrison ’02, Jeff Hortman ’02, Melissa Jarrell ’02, Adam Kijowski ’02, William Krueger ’02, Garrett Manis ’03, Alex Murray ’02, Erin Pridgen ’02, and Frank Stegall ’02, all of Rome, Ga., and Megan Bevill ’02, Cartersville, Ga.
