Rome News-Tribune selected Tiger football players as player of the week five out of 11 weeks this season. For the first week of the season, Lawton Wilson, senior, was named as one of two players of the week. “Darlington’s Lawton Wilson is arguably the most complete quarterback in Greater Rome,” Green said in the news article. “He’s a leader both on and off the field. He’s a vocal leader and leader by example and that’s what we expect from a quarterback,” Head Coach Tommy Atha said in the same article.

Green named linebacker Bert Collier, junior, player of the week in the fifth week of the season because of his ability to make plays with his intensity. “Bert’s very intense on the field,” Atha said in that article. “He knows just one speed when he’s out there. When he’s in the game, you’re going to get 100 percent from him.”

Week seven saw running back Chantz McClinic named player of the week. “He’s a very unselfish player,” Atha said about McClinic. “He’s going to play hard whether he gets the ball or not and he’s willing to do whatever we ask of him. You always know what kind of effort you’re going to get out of him.”

Defensive tackle Lee Graddy made player of the week in the tenth week of the season. According to Atha, “Lee is an intense young man and he wants to win very badly. He makes us better on the offensive side of the ball as well because he gets on the scout defense and comes after us. He loves what he does on defense and I think that shows on Friday nights.”

The newspaper’s defensive player of the eleventh week of the season was Jon Chumbler. “Jon is a tremendously steady player on defense,” Atha said. “He’s always had a knack for being around the football and always makes big plays in crucial situations. Jon is just a smart player … and understands both sides of the ball.”
