Darlington Players to present scenes from “The Apple Tree”

The Darlington Players will present “The Diary of Adam and Eve,” the first act of Jerry Bock’s and Sheldon Harnick’s musical “The Apple Tree” Nov. 10 in the Zelle Fine Arts Center.
“The Diary of Adam and Eve” is based on a story written by Mark Twain, which bears the same name as Act 1. This act tells the story of Adam and Eve, the first man and woman on Earth. Characters include three Eves (at different stages of life), Adam and two snakes. Eve is played by junior Stephanie Schecter, senior Courtney Stevens and senior Grier Fricks, while Adam is played by junior Stephen Gay. Senior Bryce Pitts and sophomore Jamie Vincent play the role of the snake.
“The musical is beautifully written,” said Jason Whitfield, drama and musical theater teacher. “It portrays the biblical beginning of time quite hilariously.”
The musical theater class has been working on “The Diary of Adam and Eve” for nearly two months. The cast meets every day of the week during 8th period. The first evening dress rehearsal is Nov. 1.
“The plot of this Old Testament story sheds new light, with which people today can relate to today,” said Gay. “It portrays Adam and Eve as characters with emotions, just like the feelings we deal with every day.”
Cast members agreed that the show will make the audience laugh and cry, as well as leave them with a new twist on an old story.
“It is a really funny show,” said Gay. “There are several jokes strewn about in the dialogue, but at the same time there are a few pieces which are rather somber.”
Cast members say that there are several great scenes that the audience will find particularly enjoyable, including Eve’s performance of the song “Here in Eden,” Adam’s discovery of humor, and the snake’s first appearance.
Students, parents and alumni are invited to stop by Zelle Drama Room at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 10 to see “The Diary of Adam and Eve.” Admission is free.
