Darlington Players to Open Season with One Act Plays

The Darlington Players’ 1999-2000 season opens with “An Evening of One Act Plays by David Ives” Thursday, Sept. 30, through Sunday, Oct. 3, at 8 p.m. in the Zelle Drama room. “The Philadelphia,” “Foreplay, or the Art of the Fugue,” and “English Made Simple” are part of a longer piece entitled All in the Timing, which has played to New York and regional audiences for almost a decade.
Cast members of “The Philadelphia” are senior Shelby Sams as Al, freshman Jamie Kleist as the waitress, and senior Allen Babcock as Mark.
Junior Spencer Warren plays Chuck in “Foreplay, or the Art of the Fugue.” Performing with Warren are senior Susan Ritacca as Amy, junior Charles Conner as Chuck 2, junior Holly Jarrell as Annie, junior John Michael Boling as Chuck 3, and senior Tameka Hawkins as Alma.
Senior Raul Gonzalez plays Jack in “English Made Simple,” with sophomore Liz Fine as Jill and junior Morgan McCrary as the voice of the loudspeaker.
“Often described as somewhere between Saturday Night Live and Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Ives can create brilliant comic mayhem out of such common things as miniature golf, meeting people at parties, or not being able to get what you want in a restaurant,” said David Powell, director and adviser to the Darlington Players.
“His tool is language,” Powell said. “This is the kind of material which allows young actors to stretch the boundaries of technique, and audiences will be delighted.”
