Darlington Players find work and romance don’t mix

Darlington Players explore the dangers of mixing union negotiations with workplace romance in the “bright and brassy” romantic comedy, The Pajama Game, so called by Music Theatre International. Performances will be held Feb. 7, 8, at 8 p.m., and Feb. 9, at 3 p.m., in the Rome City Auditorium. This unconventional, fast-paced Broadway favorite directed by George Abbott and scored by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross opened on May 13, 1954 and ran for 1,063 performances. Brimming with songs and dances, the play features plenty of splashy, fun production numbers.
Conditions at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory are anything but peaceful, as sparks fly between new superintendent Sid Sorokin and Babe Williams, leader of the union grievance committee. Their stormy relationship comes to a head when the workers strike for a 7½-cent pay increase, setting off not only a conflict between management and labor, but a battle of the sexes as well.
Major roles will be played by Elyse Moody as Babe Williams, Russell Evans as Sid Sorokin, Brittany Pittman as Gladys and Paul Kountz as Hines.
Tickets for The Pajama Game, go on sale to Fine Arts Boosters’ Club patrons and members only beginning Monday, Jan. 6. Patrons are entitled to one free ticket for each member of their immediate family, as part of their patron benefits. A limited number of reserved seats will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.
General tickets will be available on Monday, Jan. 20, at several area locations, such as Kroger East and West, Rome Area Council for the Arts, and Traditions. Tickets are $10 ($5 for students, senior citizens, and children).
To order tickets, call 802-4365, press the asterisk (*) and extension number 598 after the call is answered. Leave a message with name, phone number, and the number and date of tickets needed. Tickets will be available for pick-up at the Darlington receptionist’s desk in the administration building, or may be picked up at the auditorium at lest 30 minutes prior to performances.
