Darlington Mourns Loss of Board Chair

Darlington School Chairman of the Board of Trustees Fred Kennedy '60, Augusta, Ga., died Saturday, Dec. 2 of a sudden heart attack. Kennedy, president of Kennedy Broadcasting Inc., Augusta, was an active member of the Darlington community and a committed civic leader.
Kennedy had previously served on Darlington’s Board of Visitors and the Campaign for Darlington committee, and served as the chairman of the presidential search committee in 1998 and 1999.
“We mourn this terrible loss with his wife Jackie and their two sons (Fred, 17, and Andrew, 14),” said Darlington President David Hicks. “Fred Kennedy loved Darlington School and has meant a lot to us. His cheerful, unaffected manner and his bold, intelligent leadership will be missed.”
Kennedy entered Darlington in September 1956, graduating in June 1960. He was a 1964 graduate of Princeton University and received his law degree from Harvard University in 1967.
He was a captain in the Army and a veteran of the Vietnam War, during which he received an Army Commendation Medal and a Bronze Star.
Kennedy’s community involvement includes service to the Boys Club of Augusta as a former president, former president of the Wildflower & Beautification Trust Fund, and past director and vice president of the Augusta Richmond County Clean Community Commission.
The funeral will be held at First Baptist Church of Augusta, Tuesday, Dec. 5, at 11 a.m. The family has requested gifts in memory of Fred Kennedy be made to Darlington School in lieu of flowers.
