Darlington hosts Atlanta symphony; benefits Rome symphony and arts council

Darlington is hosting Around Georgia 2002, a special concert for the Rome community by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, on Tuesday, June 25, at 7:30 p.m. The performance will be held at the A.J. Huffman ’67 Memorial Athletic Center and will benefit the Rome Symphony Orchestra and Rome Area Council for the Arts.
Doors will open at 6:45 p.m. General admission tickets in stadium seating are $15 for adults, $10 for students. Patron admission tickets are $40 and include preferred floor seating and a post-concert reception with ASO Music Director Robert Spano. Tickets for the concert may be purchased at Rome Area Council for the Arts, 231 E. First St. and The Music Room, 406 E. 2nd Avenue. For more information call 706-295-ARTS or 706-291-SYMP.
Conducted by Robert Spano, the performance will include works of Rossini, Mozart, Barber, and Beethoven and will feature ASO Principal Bassoonist Carl Nitchie. The patron reception will be held in the Yankee Wrestling Room in the Huffman Memorial Athletic Center immediately following the concert.
An outreach program with ASO musicians and local high school and college music students will precede the performance. The program will provide insight to students about the life and career of professional musicians, including training, routines, musical concepts, and career issues.
Around Georgia 2002 is a series of statewide concerts and education and outreach activities, and as the basis of an ongoing creative partnership, similar to the relationship it is forging with Atlanta’s communities. In addition to Rome, the ASO will also perform in Albany and Perry as part of the program.
The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is the largest arts organization in the Southeast and one of the youngest American orchestras to achieve prominence on the global stage. Robert Spano is music director and Donald Runnicles is principal guest conductor. The orchestra’s recordings, some featuring the globally renowned ASO Chorus, have earned 18 Grammys. Now in its 57th season, the ASO performs a year-round slate of more than 250 concerts. The orchestra supports 200 young musicians annually in the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra and Talent Development programs.
