Darlington hosts 3rd Annual Tiger Invitational

Eighteen teams traveled from throughout the Southeast to compete in Darlington School's 3rd Annual Northwest Georgia Tiger Invitational Jan. 14 and 15 at the A.J. Huffman ('67) Memorial Athletic Center. The diving portion was held Friday afternoon, and the swimming portion on Saturday.
"I am very pleased to see how big this invitational has become," said Rob Meaney, swim coach. "The last two years we've only had five teams and maybe 100 swimmers. This year it has more than tripled with 360 swimmers."
First, second and third place trophies were awarded to Notre Dame High School (Tenn.), Smyrna High School (Tenn.) and Sequoyah High School (Ga.), respectively. From the Rome/Floyd County area, Rome High School finished fifth, and Darlington 10th.
"Everything ran very smoothly. Darlington parents and parents from other schools helped out with collecting money, timing, scoring, preparing food, etcetera," said Meaney. "A lot of my swimmers had best times, and everyone really seemed to enjoy the event."
According to Meaney, this year's team is shaping up well.
"It's been a tough season with so much going on and having the season broken up by exams, Thanksgiving break, Christmas holidays and illnesses," he said. "But I am very pleased that our swimmers and divers have stuck with it and, at the same time, managed to be involved with other activities and keep their grades up. They are true scholar athletes."
The Darlington Tigers' swam against Lovett in their last home meet Tuesday, Jan. 18, and are currently preparing for the the state's biggest invitational meet, the 35th Metro Atlanta Invitational, Jan. 29 at Westminster Schools.
"Last year they had 45 teams, and they have a very fast pool," said Meaney. "I expect great things from our swimmers there."
