Darlington falls for the arts

Since its inception in 1991, Darlington’s annual fine arts event has evolved from a one-day festival to a month-long celebration involving students at all three divisions. This year, the celebration will culminate with the annual Fall for the Arts Festival on Friday, Oct. 16, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Middle School. The public is welcome and admission is free.
“This year’s festival is going to be phenomenal,” said Kim Tunnell, fine arts director. “One of my main goals is to use the arts as an opportunity to pull all three divisions together, and that is exactly what we are doing with this celebration. I am so thankful to our parents, faculty and students who have truly embraced this event and jumped right in to help make it happen. I believe Darlington’s fine arts program is one of the school’s greatest strengths, and this will be a wonderful chance for our kids to share their talents with the community. We hope everyone will come out and join us!”
Entertainment will include performances by the Third- and Fourth-Grade Chorus and String Ensemble; the Middle School Jazz Band, Orchestra, Chorus and several soloists; and the Upper School Guitar Ensembles, Jazz Band, Strings, Ladies’ Chorale, Men’s Chorale, Concert Choir, Random Notes and Darlingtones.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of fun activities for children of all ages – including making folk art signs, doing spin art, painting murals, making tissue paper flowers and painting flower pots – and to browse the Bake Sale and Silent Auction. Proceeds will benefit the Fine Arts Booster Club.
“The Bake Sale will include your traditional baked goods as well as a variety of other tasty treats like caramel apples, popcorn and bottled water,” Tunnell said, “and the Silent Auction will feature some very special items as well, including gift baskets and tickets to our winter musical, ‘Hello Dolly.’”
Middle and Upper School students will be dismissed at 2 p.m. to participate in the activities. Students in grades 3 and 4 will be bused over from the Lower School at 2:15 p.m. Parking will be available at the baseball field and in Trippeer lot, the large parking lot on the left as you enter Darlington’s campus at Tiger Way.
