Darlington Christmas teaches joy of giving

Teenagers collecting toys, smiling children’s faces opening presents, Santa Claus visiting campus—the season just would not feel the same without Darlington Christmas. Once again, Upper School students presented Christmas gifts to area children during holiday festivities held on campus, Dec. 9.
Sponsored by the “Y” Cabinet, this Darlington tradition was started by George Awsumb about 25 years ago. “Our Darlington students receive the priceless gift of bringing joy into someone else’s life by participating in this annual event,” Jill Pate, director of student counseling and “Y” Cabinet adviser, said.
Fifty-five groups of Darlington students, usually three in a group, “adopted” a child from the School’s Sage dining service, ARAMARK facilities services, or the area’s Department of Family and Community Services. Each Darlington student group received a wish list of needs and wants from its child. The children received bikes, skates, video games, and dolls, as well as jackets, sweaters, and underwear.
