Darlington celebrates the life of Sancy Whitaker

The Darlington Community was saddened by the recent death of longtime educator Sancy Byrd Hamilton Whitaker after a long illness.
Born Christmas Day, 1931, in Memphis, Tenn., she was the younger of two children of Ercell Century Hamilton, a Chevrolet salesman, and the former Mary Lillian Tucker. She grew up in Hughes, Ark., and was valedictorian of her 1948 Hughes High School class. She married Alexander Whyte Whitaker III on Dec. 18, 1957, in Hughes. After his Army service in Hawaii, they moved to Rome in 1959, where he taught English, first at Darlington School, and later as associate professor at Berry College.
Mrs. Whitaker taught in the Rome community for over 50 years. She was a math teacher at Thornwood School from 1963 to 1971 before serving as a private math and reading tutor for hundreds of Rome-area students. Before moving to Rome, she taught at public and private schools in Arkansas and Hawaii. She also taught classes at Darlington School and at Berry Academy, and administered tests for a local psychologist.
Mrs. Whitaker was a 1953 graduate of Vassar College, where she majored in mathematics. She transferred there after a year at Southwestern of Memphis (now Rhodes College), where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. She later did graduate studies in philosophy at Ohio State University and in psychological testing at Georgia State University.
She was also a member of Rome’s First Presbyterian Church, PEO Sisterhood, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Mrs. Whitaker was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, her parents and one brother. She is survived by her son, Alexander Whyte Whitaker IV (Maria); two daughters, Laura Donelson Whitaker-Lea (Robert) and Anne Turberville Whitaker Harvey (Robert); five grandchildren, Andrew Alexander Whitaker, Emily Caroline Whitaker, Michael Carlyle Whitaker, Wittstatt Alexandra Whitaker-Lea, and Bailey Elizabeth Whitaker-Lea; and seven nieces and nephews.
The family has asked that memorials be given to the Thornwood Scholarship Fund at Darlington School, 1014 Cave Spring Rd. SW, Rome, GA, 30161.
