Darlington Celebrates Centennial with Rome Braves

As part of Darlington’s Centennial Celebration, the School sponsored Darlington Day at the Rome Braves Sunday, Aug. 21. The Rome community as well as Darlington faculty, staff, students, parents and alumni joined in the celebration, and despite the heat, it was a great event to Restore the Roar and share The Tiger Way.
School spirit was evident with the junior varsity and varsity cheerleading squads, more than 150 students as well as the Darlington Tiger in attendance. Headmaster Tom Whitworth threw out the first pitch. Additionally, Darlington staff members provided purple water bottles and foam baseballs to fans as they entered the stadium.
"The opportunity to be such a meaningful part of Darlington Day at the Braves game was a thrill for both Margo and me. I especially enjoyed the opportunity to walk out on that beautiful field and pretend, for just a second, that I was back in the 'good old days' playing and enjoying this wonderful sport," said Whitworth. "In fact, I was nervous about getting the ball to the catcher(I certainly did not want to embarrass our fans or myself). In short, the opportunity to come together with students and families and friends of Darlington was a phenomenal example of the power of the spirit alive and well in Rome and Darlington. Mike Dunn, the general manager for the Braves, should be very, very proud of the great work of his people who made all of us from the School feel right at home."
The Braves lost 5-0 to the Savannah Sand Gnats, who were ranked 13th in the South Atlantic League in team ERA entering Sunday. According to reports, approximately 3,512 fans attended the game.
Other upcoming community events honoring Darlington’s Centennial include “Winds of the Season,” a free concert featuring the Northwest Georgia Winds with performances by Darlington School music ensembles and The Three Rivers Singers.
