Darlington announces Commencement plans

As Darlington prepares to graduate the Class of 2007, we are pleased to announce that W. Gordon Neville Jr. (’55) will speak at the Baccalaureate Service on May 25, and Raymond Murray will be keynote speaker at Commencement on May 26.
Gordon Neville has been a member of the Darlington community for 48 years – including four years as a resident student and 44 years as faculty member. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Davidson College and a master’s from the University of West Georgia.
During his tenure at Darlington, Neville taught geography, Bible and math; coached football, basketball and soccer; and served as resident dean of Wilcox Hall, business manager, Upper School dean of students, chairman of the Discipline and Religious Life Committees, Student Senate adviser, associate headmaster, and director of the J. Daniel Hanks Heritage Society. He is a member of the Cum Laude Society and the recipient of the Parents Choice Award, the Richard M. Yankee Excellence in Teaching Award, the House Senate Award, the James Douglas Brown Jr. Award, and the Oscar Betts ’19 Master Teacher Award.
Upon Neville’s retirement, the Neville Family Fund was established in honor of Gordon and his wife, Betsy. The earnings from this fund are awarded as tuition assistance to qualified students in need of financial aid.
Raymond Murray has taught and coached at Darlington for 21 years. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of the South – Sewanee and a master’s from the University of West Georgia.
At Darlington, Murray has taught Freshman Honors, Sophomore Honors, junior and senior English, and Cinema. He has also served as a college adviser for 10 years and coached Middle School football, junior varsity baseball, varsity softball and varsity golf. He is a recipient of the James Douglas Brown Jr. Award, the Richard M. Yankee Excellence in Teaching Award and the Oscar Betts ’19 Master Teacher Award. He has also appeared in five editions of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.
The Baccalaureate Service will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, May 25 in Morris Chapel. Commencement will be Saturday, May 26 at 9:30 a.m. at the Upper School campus. For more information, please call 706-235-6051.
